Drill Yard
Exerzierplatz
Renaissance Barracks
The Renaissance drill yard was the institutional response to a fundamental military problem: gunpowder weapons killed men trained their entire lives with sword and lance, but required an entirely new discipline. A musket misfiring from trembling hands, a pike square breaking under cavalry pressure, a volley loosed too early — these failures could destroy an entire formation. Spanish Tercio doctrine answered with obsessive repetition: the caracole, the countermarch, the platoon fire rotation drilled until they became reflex. The walled drill yard — visible in sixteenth-century Spanish and Italian garrison plans — provided space for pike formations to maneuver and musketeers to rehearse loading sequences. In the game it produces the Renaissance military roster: musketeers, pistoliers, pike-and-shot formations, and cannon crews. Position it behind defensive works — an enemy that reaches your drill yard denies you the trained units needed to counterattack.
