Gatling Gun

The Gatling gun was the first true rapid-fire weapon — a multi-barreled rotating cannon cranked by hand that cycled through six or more barrels, each loading, firing, and ejecting in sequence, at rates no single-barrel weapon of the era could approach. Richard Gatling patented his design in 1862 and wherever it was deployed it dominated the battlefield: in the Great Plains cavalry wars, the Franco-Prussian War, and Zulu conflicts worldwide. The distinctive high-speed rattle scattered formations that held against single-shot rifles, its psychological effect as powerful as its physical lethality. In the game the Gatling crew deploys a suppression platform far beyond anything infantry of its era can answer, shredding advancing formations and cavalry charges alike. Its weakness is slow traverse, limited mobility, and vulnerability to flanking units that get behind its fixed firing arc or to indirect fire it cannot answer.
