Sanctuary
DE Heiligtum
When the Roman Empire collapsed, it was isolated religious communities across Eurasia that preserved accumulated knowledge through the chaos of the early medieval centuries — scriptoria in Ireland and the Frankish kingdoms, mountain retreats in the Himalayas, way-stations along the Silk Road. Their occupants copied manuscripts by candlelight, cultivated medicinal gardens, brewed remedies, and drained marshes to feed their communities. Wherever they took root, these sanctuaries became the universities, hospitals, inns, and banks of the early Middle Ages. In game terms the Sanctuary generates culture, science, and food simultaneously — a uniquely versatile building for its era. It also strengthens the Prophet unit's reach into neutral or rival territories, and provides healing to nearby units through its infirmary. Controlling sanctuaries means controlling the intellectual and spiritual infrastructure of the medieval world.
