The J2M Raiden, in service from 1944, deliberately broke with the Zero philosophy of agility at any cost: a compact, heavily powered airframe gave it a climb rate and top speed that let it actually intercept high-flying US bombers like the B-29 — a role the Zero itself had become too slow for. Production troubles and material shortages kept numbers low. In the game it is the strongest stage of the Zero line, with the highest speed and range in the entire line.
