Early Cruiser
DE Früher Kreuzer
The early steam cruiser was caught between two eras — not fully committed to steam, not ready to abandon sail, combining both in an awkward but practical hybrid. When the wind failed, a coal-fired engine drove the ship at eight to twelve knots; when wind was favorable, the crew hoisted canvas and shut down the boiler to conserve precious coal supplies. Wrought iron or early steel hulls replaced timber, and smoothbore cannon gave way to rifled breech-loaders. The navies of the 1860s through 1880s deployed these ships on global patrol duties — showing the flag in distant colonies, protecting trade routes, and subduing the occasional coastal rebellion. The first experimental iron armor made some of them genuine ironclads, blurring the line between cruiser and capital ship. In the game the early cruiser is a versatile mid-range warship effective against unarmored vessels and coastal targets, transitional in technology and performance, outclassed by purpose-built ironclads in direct combat.
