The Keshik were Genghis Khan's mounted household guard - handpicked elite riders who protected the Khan in peace and formed the spearhead and command reserve in war. On hardy steppe ponies they wore lamellar armour and the iron spiked helmet with a fur rim, and wielded the famed Mongol composite bow, striking with deadly accuracy at full gallop and even in the backward Parthian shot. Fast, tireless and disciplined, they wore down heavier foes before they could ever close. The early guard: fast horse-archers that outrun any foot troop.
