Horse Archer
DE Berittener Bogenschütze
For the civilizations of the Eurasian steppe — Scythians, Parthians, early Mongols — the horse archer was not a specialized unit but the foundation of all military thinking. A warrior who could draw a powerful composite bow at full gallop, shoot accurately while the horse moved, and change direction instantly to evade pursuing infantry combined mobility and firepower that sedentary armies struggled to counter for centuries. The Parthian shot — firing backwards over a retreating horse — entered Latin as a metaphor for a final devastating blow. Persian horse archers harassed Greek infantry at Marathon; Scythian riders tormented every army that tried to pin them down. In the game this unit is a mobile harassment specialist excelling at hit-and-run attacks, but must avoid direct melee with heavier cavalry or formed infantry who can absorb arrow fire and close the gap.
