Catapult Quadrireme

The catapult quadrireme was antiquity's most ambitious attempt to merge oar-power with heavy siege artillery. Rowed by four banks of oarsmen and carrying a torsion catapult amidships, she could hurl stones of ten kilograms into enemy hulls or harbor fortifications at ranges no archer could approach. Hellenistic admirals deployed such vessels at the sieges of Rhodes and Syracuse, suppressing wall defenders while infantry prepared assault ladders. The technical challenge was immense: a catapult's recoil threatened to shake a hull apart, requiring reinforced frames and careful placement. Her top speed was slower than a pure trireme, and the catapult crew needed calm water and time to reload. In the game she is a ranged naval siege unit that demolishes coastal fortifications and other ships from distance, but is vulnerable to fast ramming galleys that close before she can reload.
