Watchtower
DE Wachturm
The Bronze Age watchtower is the first permanent stone fortification most civilizations erected — a square or round masonry shaft rising four to eight meters above surrounding walls or open ground, giving sentinels an elevated field of observation no ground-level position could match. Towers of this type have been excavated at Canaanite city-gates, along Minoan palace perimeters on Crete, and at Egyptian frontier posts of the Middle Kingdom. Stone construction meant the tower could resist fire, outlast flooding, and withstand sling-stone barrages that would collapse a timber platform. A beacon fire on top could relay a warning across fifty kilometres in minutes. In the game the watchtower provides a large vision radius, a zone-of-control bonus that slows enemy movement nearby, and a garrison point for ranged units firing from its elevated position. It is the cornerstone of any early defensive perimeter, far more durable than any wooden equivalent.
