Trading Post
DE Handelsposten
The Renaissance trading post was the physical anchor of long-distance commerce in an age when spices from the Moluccas, silk from China, and silver from the Americas moved through a chain of intermediary hubs stretching halfway around the world. Portuguese feitorias, Venetian fondachi, and the storehouses of the Hanseatic League all served the same function: a fortified or supervised depot where merchants of different cultures could store, inspect, and negotiate cargoes without the risks of open-air markets. Factors — professional agents resident in the post — maintained credit records, issued letters of exchange, and enforced contracts under commercial law. In the game the trading post generates substantial passive gold income and amplifies the output of adjacent markets and storage buildings. It is the commercial keystone of a Renaissance economy, and controlling several simultaneously makes the difference between financing one campaign and sustaining an entire war.
