DE Marktplatz
The Early Medieval marketplace was the heartbeat of the growing town — an open square where the rural economy met urban demand beneath the shadow of church towers and guild halls. From the Carolingian period onward, towns secured royal or episcopal charters granting the right to hold weekly markets: millers, tanners, blacksmiths, and cloth merchants set up stalls beside travelling peddlers and peasant farmers unloading cart after cart of grain. Guild masters regulated weights, suppressed fraud, and protected the reputation of local crafts. Market tolls became one of the primary revenues of every medieval lord and bishop. In the game the marketplace significantly boosts gold income, enables the construction of economic technologies, and extends a modest trade bonus to surrounding production buildings. Its presence marks the transition from subsistence economy to a functioning market society capable of funding professional armies and extended military campaigns.
