Light Cruiser

The light cruiser was the navy's swift messenger and commerce raider — built for speed and endurance rather than the ponderous firepower of a battleship. Displacing three to ten thousand tons and armed with guns of one hundred to one hundred and fifty millimeters, it could sustain thirty knots for days, placing it beyond the reach of heavier ships while still overpowering destroyers and merchant convoys. In both World Wars, light cruisers scouted ahead of battle fleets, hunted enemy commerce in distant oceans, and provided anti-aircraft screening for capital ships. The German Emden raided Allied shipping across the Indian Ocean for months before being cornered. The Battle of the River Plate — two British light cruisers against the pocket battleship Graf Spee — showed the limits of the type against heavier adversaries. In the game it is a fast, versatile naval unit that dominates destroyer engagements and disrupts enemy supply lines, but must avoid sustained exchange with heavy cruisers or battleships.
