Half-Track
DE Halbkettenfahrzeug
The half-track emerged in the 1930s as the answer to an unsolved problem: how to move infantry across shell-cratered, wire-strewn ground at the same pace as tanks. Front wheels steered easily on roads; the rear track system distributed weight and maintained traction where wheeled vehicles bogged down. German Sd.Kfz. 251 half-tracks carried a squad of ten grenadiers under thin armor protection and a ring-mounted machine gun that provided all-round suppressive fire on the move. American M3 half-tracks served every front from North Africa to the Pacific, towing guns, carrying ammunition, and evacuating casualties. Their thin armor stopped small arms but not anti-tank weapons — they were transport, not fighting vehicles. In game the half-track delivers infantry rapidly to the front, provides mobile fire support, and fills the vital escort role between the tank and the foot soldier. Vulnerable to artillery and anti-tank fire, it must avoid sustained direct engagements.
