Early Tank
DE Früher Panzer
The early tank was born from the stalemate of the Western Front — a mechanical beast conceived to cross barbed wire, bridge shell craters, and bring firepower within bayonet range of enemy trenches without killing the crew. The British Mark I that rolled at the Somme in September 1916 was slow, unreliable, and prone to mechanical failure, but it terrified defenders who had no weapon to answer it. The rotating turret, standardized in later designs, allowed the main gun to engage targets in any direction without turning the entire vehicle. By 1918 the tank had evolved from a novelty into the core of assault doctrine. Germany's A7V matched it in fearsome appearance if not in numbers. The clumsy, steam-age aesthetics of these machines disguise a genuine revolution in warfare. In game the early tank is a powerful shock unit that dominates infantry of its era but is slow, mechanically fragile, and vulnerable to artillery bombardment.
