Bronze Cannon
DE Bronzekanone
The bronze cannon of the Renaissance was the weapon that ended medieval fortification as a reliable defense. Earlier bombards fired stone balls that cracked on impact; the precision-cast bronze barrel accepted iron balls machined to a consistent diameter, producing a tight gas seal that delivered far greater muzzle velocity and destructive force. Ottoman engineers under Mehmed II demonstrated the cannon's potential at Constantinople in 1453: massive bombards reduced walls that had stood a thousand years within weeks. Across Europe, military architects scrambled to design low, angled bastions that absorbed cannon shot rather than shattering under it. In game the bronze cannon delivers devastating siege damage against fortifications and significant area damage to massed infantry. It is slow to reposition and vulnerable to cavalry raids, but nothing else in its era matches its destructive power against fixed defenses.
