The nuclear submarine dissolved the submarine's oldest limitation: the need to surface and recharge batteries. A uranium reactor supplies power indefinitely, allowing months of submerged patrol at sustained speeds no diesel-electric boat could match. The USS Nautilus proved the concept in 1955 by sailing beneath the Arctic ice to the North Pole; Soviet Alfa-class boats later reached forty-five knots submerged — faster than many surface escorts. Ballistic missile submarines of the Ohio and Typhoon classes carry enough warheads to destroy entire continents, making them the ultimate second-strike deterrent. Attack variants hunt enemy submarines and surface ships with homing torpedoes and anti-ship missiles launched from depth. In the game the nuclear submarine combines unlimited operational range with both torpedo and ballistic strike capability, the most powerful naval unit of the Atomic Age, countered only by dedicated anti-submarine forces.
